Preferences, Utilities, and Quantitative Judgments

چکیده
This paper is concerned with a major hiatus in prescriptive decision analysis, which of course includes portions of the AI preferences field when used in interactions with human beings. In such settings, all multi-attribute decision aids must elicit some sort of preference ordering, and this entails quantitative judgments. Therein lies the rub: since all quantitative judgments involve cognitive processes, they have certain properties that may or may not match the properties assumed by the corresponding model. In addition, such judgments are subject to biasing effects, such as range or centering effects, in varying degree depending on the nature of the judgment. Fortunately, there is a field of psychology, called psychophysics, that deals specifically with such judgments and their properties. This paper surveys the field and explains how it can be applied to assess the soundness of quantitative judgments made in the context of constructing preference orderings, and what general lessons might be learned. Note: this is distinct from issues of descriptive adequacy of the models, which may be entirely irrelevant in the prescriptive set-

Validity and interpretation of preference-based measures of health-related quality of life.
Utilities are numeric measurements that reflect an individual's beliefs about the desirableness of a health condition, willingness to take risks to gain health benefits, and preferences for time. This report discusses the approaches to assess and compare the validity of methods used to assign utilities for cost-utility analysis. Threats to validity include construct underrepresentation and cons...
متن کاملQuantitative Measurement of Quality Attribute Preferences Using Conjoint Analysis
Conjoint analysis has received considerable attention as a technique for measuring customer preferences through utility tradeoffs among products and services. This paper shows how the method can be applied to the area of software architecture to analyze architectural tradeoffs among quality attributes. By eliciting customers utilities through conjoint analysis, software engineers can identify a...
متن کاملSelf-reported dermatological problems and preferences for health: an epidemiological survey.
Patient preferences for health can be assessed and expressed in quantitative terms known as health state utilities. In this epidemiological study, we demonstrate the importance of dermatological problems for health state utilities. A cross-sectional survey including 5,404 individuals aged 20-84 years was conducted in the County of Uppland, Sweden. Information on dermatological problems and use ...
متن کاملELECTRE I-based group decision methodology with risk preferences in an imprecise setting for flexible manufacturing systems
A new hesitant fuzzy set (HFS)-ELECTRE for multi-criteria group decision-making (MCGDM) problems is developed in this paper. In real-world applications, the decision makers (DMs)’ opinions are often hesitant for decision problems; thus, considering the exact data is difficult. To address the issue, the DMs’ judgments can be expressed as linguistic variables that are converted into the HFSs, con...
متن کاملSurrogate utility estimation by long-term partners and unfamiliar dyads
To what extent are people able to make predictions about other people's preferences and values? We report two experiments that present a novel method assessing some of the basic processes in surrogate decision-making, namely surrogate-utility estimation. In each experiment participants formed dyads who were asked to assign utilities to health related items and commodity items, and to predict the...
